    31 October 2011 –

The United Nations today launched the International Year of Cooperatives with the General Assembly President underlining their role as catalysts of socially-inclusive development and capacity to empower communities through jobs and income generation.

“Cooperatives contribute to food security, rural development, and other social services,” said Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, opening the Assembly’s plenary meeting to launch 2012 as the International Year.

“They are not only provide productive employment opportunities to marginalized groups including women, youth, persons with disabilities, older persons and indigenous people, but also make a valuable contribution through the technical assistance programmes of their human resources development component.”

The Assembly had earlier decided that 2012 will be observed as the International Year of Cooperatives in recognition of their contribution to socio-economic development, particularly with regard to poverty reduction, employment creation and social integration. The theme of the year will be ‘Cooperative enterprises help build a better world.’

Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro pointed out that as the world witnesses growing public discontent as a result of the financial and economic crises, the international community could learn from the cooperative movement, which, she said, balanced both economic viability and social responsibility.

“As self-help organizations, cooperatives are inherently people-centred. They not only meet material needs, but also the human need to participate proactively in improving one’s life.

“Moreover, with democratic decision-making processes and a focus on cultivating member skills and capacities, cooperatives offer a model for harnessing the energies and passions of all,” said Ms. Migiro.

During the year, efforts will be made to expand public awareness of the role of cooperatives – especially in relation to the fulfilment of the internationally-agreed poverty reduction and socio-economic development targets known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Efforts will also be made to encourage the growth of cooperatives worldwide and strengthen them through policies and legal frameworks that facilitate their growth.

“By virtue of their organizational characteristics, cooperative enterprises are user-owned and community responsive. They continue to aggregate economic power enabling communities to compete successfully in the global economy,” Mr. Al-Nasser added.

At an informal roundtable on the role of cooperatives in sustainable development, Sha Zukang, the Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, pointed out that cooperatives had an important role to play in the transition to a green economy, saying they offered a business model with comparative advantage in creating socially-inclusive and environmentally sound economic practices.

“Cooperatives have also been noteworthy for their contributions to rural development and agricultural productivity across both the developed and developing world,” said Mr. Sha, who is also Secretary-General of next year’s UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20).

Across Europe, for example, cooperatives account for some 60 per cent of the processing and marketing of agricultural commodities, and they also hold a 50 per cent share in the supply of inputs,” Mr. Sha added.

At a news conference at UN Headquarters, Mr. Sha described cooperatives as “self-help organizations” that generated employment and improved incomes, thus contributing to poverty reduction. “Cooperatives also strengthen local economies and communities by tapping local resources and opportunities,” he said.

In Rome, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the UN International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD) and the UN World Food Programme (WFP) stressed that smallholder farmers reap benefits from joining agricultural cooperatives through boosting their bargaining power and sharing resources to enhance food security and reduce poverty.

“Ranging from small-scale to multi-million dollar businesses across the globe, cooperatives operate in all sectors of the economy, count over 800 million members and provide 100 million jobs worldwide – 20 per cent more than multinational enterprises,” the three Rome-based agencies said in a statement.

In 2008, the largest 300 cooperatives in the world had an aggregate turnover of $1.1 trillion, comparable to the gross domestic product (GDP) of many large economies, the agencies pointed out.

    SEGRETARIO GENERALE

MESSAGGIO IN OCCASIONE DELLA GIORNATA DELLE NAZIONI UNITE

    24 Ottobre 2011

I problemi a livello mondiale richiedono soluzioni adeguate a tale portata.

    Corruption:
    A Crime Against the MDGs.

Corruption is a serious crime that can undermine social and economic development in all societies.

No country, region or community is immune.

This year UNODC and UNDP have developed a joint global campaign, focusing on how corruption hinders efforts to achieve the internationally agreed upon Millennium Development Goals and impacts education, health, justice, democracy, prosperity and development.

  • - 2010-12-02 1 December 2010 – Significant progress in the fight against HIV/AIDS has been achieved over the past three decades, but the world must not relent in its efforts to roll back the pandemic, United Nations officials said today, stressing the importance of preventing new infections and deaths.

“Our common goal is clear: universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support. We must also work to make the AIDS response sustainable,” Mr. Ban said in his message to mark World AIDS Day, observed annually on 1 December.

He pointed out that despite the untold suffering and death that AIDS had visited upon mankind, the global community had united with passion to take action and save lives.

UN chief urges countries to ratify legal treaties to fight slavery

2 December 2010 – Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today marked the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery by urging States to bring into force all the legal instruments necessary to eradicate the scourge.

Although States worldwide support laws banning slavery, the practice still persists in many forms, he noted in his message for the Day, which is observed annually on 2 December.

“Modern slavery is a crime. People who perpetrate, condone or facilitate it must be brought to justice. Victims and survivors have a right to remedies and reparations,” he stated.

Mr. Ban said that many legal instruments exist to fight the practice, praising the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children, which entered into force in 2003, and the work of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to ensure recognition of slavery as a crime against humanity.

He urged the international community to contribute generously to the UN’s Trust Fund to help victims of slavery.

    MESSAGE FOR INTERNATIONAL PHILOSOPHY DAY

    18 November 2010

Philosophy helps us to define who we are and how we relate to each other – and to the world we live in.From the belief systems of ancient civilizations to the new frontiers of medical ethics, philosophical inquiry and exploration continue to make significant contributions to human   progress. This year, World Philosophy Day celebrates the International Year of Rapprochement of Cultures, an initiative of UNESCO. It also falls during the ob

servance of the International Year of Youth, which is promoting dialogue and mutual understanding. Philosophy deals routinely in universals – in broadly shared questions about human existence, beliefs and behaviour.  That gives it uncommon and unexpected power to help build bridges between people, and to open channels for communication among cultures. So let us use this essential expression of the human mind to change the minds of men and women – for that is where, as UNESCO's own Charter so memorably states, true peace begins. On this International Philosophy Day, let us pledge to do our part to guard against the politics of polarization, and to reject stereotypes, ignorance and hatred. Let us instead fortify our societies through reason and dialogue – the lifeblood of philosophical debate.
And let us recognize the critical role that the age-old tradition of philosophy can play in our modern, interconnected world.

    Message from Irina Bokova,

    Director-General of UNESCO

on the occasion of the World Science Day for Peace and Development

    10 November 2010

Science cannot develop in isolation. It flourishes through the dialogue of individuals, through the interaction of cultures and communities and through the meeting of minds. It prospers in a soil that is rich in diversity and in a climate that favours diffusion and cross-fertilisation. Ideas must migrate to develop, they must be shared to take root, and they must be accessible for all to benefit.

The theme of this year’s World Science Day for Peace and Development, “Science for the rapprochement of peoples and cultures,” could not be better chosen, especially as UNESCO has been designated to lead the 2010 International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures. Harnessing the power of science to bring peoples and cultures together, to make the most of the great diversity of humanity, and to foster peaceful development lies at the core of UNESCO’s mandate.

  • - 2010-11-08 UNEP launches '30 Ways in 30 Days' to inspire action on climate change

Nairobi, Kenya, 1 November 2010 - What do solar loans, sustainable tourism, tea plantations, forests in Panama and African financiers have in common?

The answer is quite simple: all are part of the global solution to climate change, and part of the United Nation's Environment Programme's "30 ways in 30 Days" initiative, launched today.

From today, a month out from the start of the UN Climate Convention meeting in Cancun, Mexico, UNEP will release online case studies to show that solutions to climate change are available and can be copied and scaled up around the world. The examples are just the tip of the iceberg and highlights in terms of existing successful climate initiatives and programmes.

UNEP's aim is to show that across the world, in myriad ways, from community-based programmes to entrepreneurial endeavours, solutions are available to help confront the challenges of climate change and to help countries, communities and businesses move towards low-emission climate-resilient growth.

    THE SECRETARY-GENERAL

    MESSAGE FOR UNITED NATIONS DAY

    24 October 2010
On United Nations Day, I express my great appreciation to the millions of people throughout the world who believe deeply in our work for peace, development and human rights, and who uphold our ideals and help us achieve our goals. To all of you, friends and fellow citizens of the world, I say: thank you. Sixty-five years ago on this date, the founding Charter of the United Nations entered into force.  Every year on UN Day, we reaffirm our global mission.  We reassert the universal values of tolerance, mutual respect and human dignity. And we recognize the progress we have made together: gains in literacy and life expectancy the spread of knowledge and technology... advances in democracy and the rule of law. But above all, UN Day is a day on which we resolve to do more. More to protect those caught up in armed conflict, to fight climate change and avert nuclear catastrophe; more to expand opportunities for women and girls, and to combat injustice and impunity; more to meet the Millennium Development Goals. Last month’s MDG Summit at the United Nations generated political momentum as well as financial commitments that are especially significant in these difficult economic times. I am determined to press ahead as the 2015 deadline approaches. Despite our problems, despite polarization and distrust, our interconnected world has opened up vast new possibilities for common progress. Let us commit to do even more to realize the great vision set out in the UN Charter.

Congratulations on taking part in the Model United Nations. This exercise will give you a full taste of the complexity of international relations -- the intricacies of negotiating among diverse peoples and perspectives, the challenges of achieving consensus, the patience required to win progress. These skills will help you in whatever course you choose in life. I trust you have all heard the saying, “united we stand, divided we fall”. That adage captures this moment in international affairs. No single country or group, no matter how powerful, can take on the major issues of the day alone. In an era when challenges spill over borders and have global reach, our future depends on how well we work together. We must unite to overcome climate change, and create a greener, more sustainable world for all. We must work in unison to defeat extreme poverty and build a more just and prosperous world. And we must stand up for human beings in crisis – people caught up in war or disaster, or those whose fundamental rights are being infringed. You are an important part of the solution. The world needs your active engagement. Use the knowledge and skills you gain from this Model UN and other pursuits to advance the objectives of the United Nations. After all, you will soon be the government officials who will negotiate peace; the community leaders who will help feed and shelter the vulnerable; the entrepreneurs and innovators who will get carbon emissions under control; the lawyers and human rights defenders who will fight injustice, impunity and intolerance. Please keep working with us, pushing us and inspiring us. Carry the torch of the timeless values articulated in the UN Charter, including by joining national organizations that support our work. Above all, help shape our world for the better; help us through these testing times; and help the United Nations deliver what the world needs at this crucial moment. Please accept my best wishes for a rewarding experience. BAN Ki-moon MESSAGE TO 2011 ROME MODEL UNITED NATIONS DELEGATES
